High above the Champagne Valley, beneath Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle, iKhayalamafu is a private nature reserve tucked away high in the mountains, wrapped in indigenous forest and laced with streams, with two cabins set quietly into the landscape rather than on top of it.
No traffic. No city noise. Just the mountain, and the odd bushbuck passing through.
The Reserve

Our private reserve is bordered on three sides by the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, one of the few places on Earth protected for both its nature and its culture. At iKhayalamafu, guests can enjoy ancient San rock art, rare mountain birds and some of the most dramatic scenery in Africa.

Shorter routes wind along the river and through the forest edge, good for an hour before breakfast. Longer ones climb higher into the mountains and connect with the public trail network beyond our boundary.

Cathkin Peak,
from your own veranda.
The reserve sits beneath Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle, with nothing between you and the escarpment but grassland and forest. On a clear night, away from any town light, the stars are the main event.

No traffic, no crowds and nowhere you need to be. Just birdsong, running water and wind in the grass. Put the phone down for a few days, and if you do need to check in, there’s Wi-Fi in both cabins.

Self-Catering
Solar power, spring water, fireplace, braai, gas hob, microwave, kettle and fridge. Firewood, kindling and paraffin firelighters are provided. Bring your own food, drink and charcoal. Firewood is limited, so bring extra bundles if you plan on lots of fires.
Minimum stay of two nights.
